Bollywood’s King Khan completed his 29 years in the industry as his debut movie ‘Deewana’ turned 29 years old. The ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ actor in the wee hours of Friday, tweeted, “Been working. Just saw the ’overwhelmed ness’ of the love of nearly 30 yrs u r showering on me here. Realised it’s more than half my life in the service of hoping to entertain u all. Will take out time tomorrow & share some love back personally. Thx needed to feel loved….” Following the post, fans flooded his Twitter feed with messages showering their favourite man with love and appreciation. ne of them tweeted, “#shahrukhkhan Nothing to the world’s biggest Superstar, a journey which inspire millions of middle class people that “kuch banne ke liye taqat ki nahi… niyaat ki zarurat hoti hai”. Another person wrote, “Thank You for making me smile when I’m down. Thank You for inspiring me when I need inspiration. Thank you for teaching me something through your interviews. I love you Khan Saab. Thank you for everything.”
Before debuting on the big screen with Rishi Kapoor and Divya Bharti’s Deewana (1992), Khan had done a string of projects on television. After Deewana becoming a hit, there was no looking back for him as he went on to becoming a part of many big banner films like Chamatkar, Bazigar, Darr among other.
Khan has ruled over the industry ever since, a few of his unforgettable characters are as follows:
Topping the list is Sharukh’s role in Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Swades’. The film which struck a chord with Indians across the globe is one of Shah Rukh’s best performances till date. Playing Mohan Bhargav, SRK brought an unseen simplicity and humbleness to the big screen with his act. Critics not only praised his path-breaking performance, but the film in itself has acquired cult classic status. It inspired and proved to be an eye-opener for an entire generation. In fact, Shah Rukh Khan even admitted to never watching Swades. Back in 2013, the actor had tweeted, “Making Swades was such an emotionally overwhelming experience that I never saw the finished product. Didn’t want the feeling to end.” Though as a fun fact, the movie was at first offered to Hrithik Roshan. Roshan rejected the movie as he thought he couldn’t see it from the director’s perspective and therefore he didn’t think he was equipped to perform the part. He thought he wasn’t the best person to translate Ashutosh’s vision.
Shah Rukh poised his first antagonist character in Darr and was greatly appreciated for his work. As Rahul Mehra starring alongside Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol, this was SRK’s first Yash Raj film. The 55-year-old actor, who at the time had largely established himself as a romance/drama hero, surprised his fans with his negative epitome in Darr. Khan’s act not only brought him praises but also opened up new doors due to the widespread recognition and response he received for playing an obsessive lover.
The sports drama, ‘Chak De!India’ came at an interesting time in the actor’s career when he was already riding high on the success of Don: The Chase Begins Again. The film further pushed the expectations of the audiences as SRK delivered another great knockout performance as coach Kabir Khan. His no-nonsense character as a coach resonated with millions as the film touched upon nationalism and instilled a sense of pride. The passion exhibited by the actor in this movie turned his role in a pragmatic one.
Well, speaking of SRK how can one forget about Devdas? This Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial not only came as a surprise to Shah Rukh’s fans but was a bit of a shocker as well. Portraying an alcoholic lover, SRK stepped into the shoes of this meticulously detailed character and delivered one of his best performances to date. The magic of Bhansali was not lost in this movie’s grandeur as Devdas’ heart-wrenching act kept everyone glued to the screen. Alongside two most gorgeous bollywood divas Madhuri Dixit and Aishwariya Rai Bachchan, this movie is still tagged as a great blockbuster hit.
SRK’s role always left the viewers feeling nostalgic, mixing up with this emotion is his super famous movie DDLJ. As die-hard fans quote “DDLJ is an emotion,” everyone can’t help but agree. A big part of pop culture today, Shah Rukh Khan as Raj Malhotra in DDLJ won hearts for his epic love story alongside Simran played by Kajol. Even today, this onscreen couple holds a very special place in the hearts of their millions of fans. This powerful duo can still send the Internet into a meltdown if they ever make a red carpet appearance together.
