As Ecuador slowly emerges from the deadly coronavirus outbreak, the country is now witnessing an eruption of a volcano in Amazon region which has left several cities covered in ash.

The Sangay volcano has had moderate eruptions for over a year that have had little impact because of its remote location, but a recent change in wind patterns has pushed ash toward the coast and affected areas including the largest city, Guayaquil.

“The ash comes out of the Sangay volcano and spreads into the Guayas province, and we see a quantity of ash that is arriving near Guayaquil,” Benjamin Bernard of the Geophysical Institute of Ecuador told reporters, referring to the province where Guayaquil is located.

The institute said it expects minor volcanic eruptions to continue in the coming days but does not expect a major eruption.

Russia‘s President Vladimir Putin has declared a state of emergency after 20,000 tonnes of diesel oil leaked into a river within the Arctic Circle.     

The spill happened when a fuel tank at a power plant near the Siberian city of Norilsk collapsed last Friday.  

The plant is owned by a subsidiary of Norilsk Nickel, which is the world’s leading nickel and palladium producer. The power plant’s director Vyacheslav Starostin has been taken into custody until 31 July, but not yet charged.  

Putin appeared shocked to learn that local authorities were first flagged to the incident by social media — two days after it happened and criticized the region’s governor Alexander Uss during the televised meeting, Reuters reported.
