International pop sensation Britney Spears urged Judge Brenda Penny to end a controversial guardianship during an emotional court hearing on wednesday, that gave her father control of her affairs since 2008.

“I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years and it’s enough,” Spears said in the 20-minute address via videolink. The 39-year-old star’s finances and personal life have been largely managed by Jamie Spears since her highly public breakdown more than a decade ago. Spears has-had a long term difficult relationship with her father Jamie Spears.

Last year, she filed to remove him from the conservatorship and give sole power over her estate to a financial institution. Her court-appointed lawyer said she was “afraid” of her father.

‘Too, too much!’

The singer in her 20 minute long statement revealed how she was “traumatized” as she pushed for her conservatorship to be ended. Her heartbreaking testimony saw her making many claims including how she hasn’t been allowed to get married or have a baby. Spears’ testimony made several startling points about her court-controlled life. She claimed her conservator stopped her from having a contraceptive intrauterine device (IUD) removed so she could get pregnant.

Following her 2006 divorce from Kevin Federline, and the loss of custody of her children the following year, Spears was snapped by paparazzi barefoot at a gas station, and notoriously shaved her head.

Under her father’s guardianship, Spears swiftly returned to performing. She released three albums, appeared on various television shows and even took up a Las Vegas residency.

But in January 2019 she abruptly announced she was suspending her performances until further notice.

She said her father and associates regularly threaten her.

“If I don’t do this, what they tell me to do, enslave me to do, they’re gonna punish me,” she said.

She also said she had been forced to take lithium – a common medicine for bipolar disorders – to the point where she felt drunk and unable to converse.

“This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good,” she said.

The singer’s former boyfriend Justin Timberlake too came forward in favour of Britney. Timberlake took to Twitter to express his support for Spears and also called out the situation she was under the conservatorship rules. Taking to Twitter, Timberlake wrote, “After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time. Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right.”

Further criticising the conservatorship rules that kept Spears under tight control, Timberlake added, “No woman should ever be restricted from making decisions about her own body. No one should EVER be held against their will… or ever have to ask permission to access everything they’ve worked so hard for.”

The singer then sent his love and support to Britney saying, “Jess and I send our love, and our absolute support to Britney during this time. We hope the courts and her family make this right and let her live however she wants to live.”

Several other celebs stepped up to support the star along with her diehard fans, who launched #FreeBritney movement and raised their voices against the concern.

A conservatorship is granted by a court for individuals who are unable to make their own decisions, like those with dementia or other mental illnesses. Spears’ conservatorship is split into two parts – one is for her estate and financial affairs and the other is for her as a person.

Under this legal agreement, Spears has not controlled her finances since 2008. That’s around the time she began to behave erratically amid her divorce from Kevin Federline and a custody battle over their two children.
