Recently, in an edited and cropped viral clip Prime Minister can be clearly heard narrating about his childhood, “If my mother had stopped me from stealing small things when I was a child, then I wouldn’t have turned out to be such a dacoit as an adult.” As per the viral claim the video says that the Prime Minister is calling himself a thief, and he used to steal since childhood.

A Facebook user, Sawan Rathor uploaded this 10 seconds clip on May 16 with the caption in Hindi, which translates, “If my mother had stopped me from stealing small things when I was a child, then I wouldn’t have turned out to be such a dacoit as an adult.”

Later, this video went viral on 8th June on Facebook and Twitter. On doing a reverse image search, a tweet was found which was uploaded on the official twitter of the Prime Minister. As per the tweet the post is around the time when Modi paid visit to Siliguri, West Bengal ahead of the fourth phase of polls which were underway, and ahead of the fifth phase of West Bengal Assembly elections. Election in Siliguri was scheduled on 17 April.

Next, on searching the video on YouTube, a video was found, dated 10th April on the BJP’s official YouTube page that was streamed live on 10 April. And, the viral 10 seconds have been clipped from a 57 minutes long speech. Modi’s speech was targeted towards Mamata Banerjee alleging that TMC workers take cut money as commission to help people avail benefits of state-run welfare schemes.

After talking about that, at the 39.40 timestamp, Modi can be heard narrating a story of a robber who cut his mother’s nose, because when he used to steal as a child his mother did not stop him, which the robber says caused him to commit bigger heists. Modi in the speech says, “…brothers and sisters when we were children, we all heard the story about a big robber who was sentenced to death. When asked about his last wish, he said that he wants to meet his mother. Then the government arranged for him to meet her, but when he met his mother he bit his mother’s nose. When people asked him why he did so, he replied saying that when he was a child, he used to steal small things and at that time if his mother had stopped he would not have become such a robber….” The part from the 40.40 timestamp, where Modi is referring to the robber talking about his mother not stopping him from stealing during his childhood has been cropped and shared without context to give the impression that Modi is talking about himself.
He then goes on to take a dig at Banerjee and said, “Didi is saying if someone is taking 100, 200 our 500 then what’s the deal?”

Thus, a clip from an old video is shared with slanderous claims is shared to mislead people. The viral 10 seconds were taken from a 57 minutes long video.
