World is a diverse place and throughout different continents inhabit billions of people. Not only, we belong from different places but we also speak distinct languages, have specific features, follow separate traditions and customs, have like – unlike beliefs and so on, thus, race and ethnicity are used to categorize certain sections of the population. In basic terms, race describes physical traits, and ethnicity refers to cultural identification. In other words, race is often perceived as something that’s inherent in our biology and therefore inherited across generations. Ethnicity, on the other hand, is typically understood as something we acquire, or self-ascribe, based on factors like where we live or the culture we share with others.

People generally broadly use the specific word ‘origin’ to refer to the inter-continental differences as well. According to the human genome project, our DNA is 99.9% the same and the differences between people are accounted for are less than 1% of DNA.

Simply put, we all should celebrate and appreciate the differences of one another while keeping in mind we are all part of the same human family.

Although, recently an image went viral, which points out the height difference between two basketball players is being shared with a claim that it shows physical inequality between Indian and the USA under-16 basketball players.

The description along the viral image reads, “USA under 16 years old vs India under 16 years old.” The team in the red jersey had ‘USA’ written on them, however, the name of the country on the blue jersey was blurred out. Several other netizens shared the same image and made similar claims. The viral post got 1.7k likes and 359 shares

On conducting a reverse image search, the truth was unfolded as a news report from 2019 was retrieved. As per the news report, which was in Spanish carried the same photo which said that the two teams were team USA and team El Salvador. El Salvador, officially known as the Republic of El Salvador, is a country in Central America.

According to another report, the two teams were playing for the FIBA Americas U16 Championship 2019 in Chile. The American team won the game with an almost 100 points’ margin.

To elucidate the matter further, photo and results of the game posted by the official Twitter handle of a sports news channel @US_diarioas was found.

This image was also found in an article of ‘Sports Ration’ dated June 19, 2019. In the picture included in the article, El-Salvador is written on the blue jersey. El Salvador is a country in Central America. The report says that there was a basketball match between America and El-Salvador and America won by a score of 114-19. The picture included in the article shows El-Salvador written on the blue jersey though this part was blurred in the viral picture.

Thus, this photo was taken before the match between the United States and El Salvador during the 2019 FIBA League of the Americas U16 women’s tournament in Chile and also, in the viral picture, those who are being told as players of India are basketball players of El Salvador. Hence the viral claim is false.
