After completing a long journey of a total of 28 Olympics, the world is going to witness another grand sport meet in 2021, which is to be held in Tokyo from 23rd July till 8th August. The Olympic Games is a quadrennial international multi-sport event celebrated as a global sports festival by people all over the world. The Olympic Games are held in both the summer and winter, with the ultimate goal of cultivating people and world peace through sports. The roots of today’s Olympic Games date back to the ancient Olympic Games, held 2,800 years ago. Also known as the “Olympiad,” the event took place in the Olympia region of ancient Greece. There are various opinions regarding its origins. It is said that the event was an athletic and artistic festival dedicated to the worship of the gods. But the ancient Olympic Games were hindered by numerous conflicts and finally came to an end in 393 AD.
The Games of the 18th Olympiad, the first Olympics to be held in Asia, were staged in Tokyo over 15 days from 10 to 24 October 1964. The Tokyo Olympics raised the curtain on Japan’s era of rapid economic growth, with the construction of expressways and the bullet train taking place at this time. Following the decision to host the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan embarked on an effective program of athletic development and achieved major success during the Games. Also, in the wake of the Olympics, sports clubs (sports schools and training clinics) sprang up across the country and played an important part in spreading sports in Japan. The Tokyo Olympics was said to be canceled after the break out of Coronavirus which engulfed the entire world.
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said, “You cannot every year change the entire sports schedule worldwide of all the major federations. You cannot have the athletes being in uncertainty” after the delay of the Olympics in 2020 during the Covid-19 outbreak. The Japanese Government declared that the Tokyo Olympic Games will not be delayed a second time and this year is the Final Option.
