Arijit Singh became a household name after his song from Aashiqui 2, Tum Hi Ho, became a massive hit. The singer lost his mother, Aditi Singh, who was undergoing treatment for Covid-19 for quite some time, has breathed her last at a hospital here, authorities at the medical facility said. Aditi Singh, was recently admitted to Amri Hospital in Kolkata’s Dhakuria, and passed away on 19th May. Aditi Singh (52) tested negative for COVID on Monday but succumbed to a cerebral stroke late on Thursday. According to an official statement issued by the medical establishment, read, “She passed away last night around 11 pm. Singh, admitted with COVID, was put on ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation). She tested negative on Monday but succumbed to a cerebral stroke last night.”
A few days ago, actress Swastika Mukherjee took to her Instagram account to share a post requesting people to help Arijit Singh’s mother, who was admitted in AMRI Dhakuria. “Need A- blood for singer Arijit Singh’s mother, admitted in Amri Dhakuria. Need it today. Pls contact @swatihihihi with verified MALE DONORS (sic),” read Swastika’s post. The post has now been deleted.
Also, Filmmaker Srijit Mukherji appealed for help on social media. Srijit tweeted in Bengali, which roughly translates to, “#Copied A- blood donor is needed for singer Arijit Singh’s mother in Dhakuria Amri tomorrow. Interested donors can contact Nitasha on 8017197476.”
Arijit too took to Facebook to ask his fans to help his mother but urged them to not go out of their way to do so. He wrote, “It is my humble request to those who are trying to help me at this hour, Please Do not overdo things just because you see a name called Arijit Singh.”
He added that every individual must be treated the same to ensure that we ‘elevate ourselves from this disaster’, “Until we learn to respect each individual, we are not going to elevate ourselves from this disaster. I am thankful to people who reached out and helped but please remember we are all human beings. Every individual is priority.”
In another Facebook post on May 11th, he talked about the COVID crisis India is facing and requested everyone to follow COVID protocol and stay safe. The B-town singer wrote, “If you have to, please use double mask. If you can, use a face shield. Do not touch your face, eye, nose, ear or mouth. If you do, please remember to sanitize your hands first. Wash your hands with soap every half an hour.”
In this period of extreme crisis both Swastika Mukherjee and Srijit Mukherji are trying tirelessly to amplify the urgent pleas for medical help. Swastika and Srijit’s Instagram handles are replete with posts amplifying requests for ICU beds and oxygen. Many several celebrities are using their social media influence to help people who are in need of medical help.
Srijit Mukherji, in an interview, confirmed the news of Arijit Singh’s mother’s death. He said, “Arijit, I and other members from the industry tried hard to save her but we couldn’t. She passed away on Wednesday after suffering a cerebral (brain) stroke.”
Arijit’s mother’s dead body was taken from Kolkata to Murshidabad for the last rites on Thursday morning.
