The Yogi Government denied the viral claim and clearly mentioned that Uttar Pradesh is not going to trifurcate into three separate states namely Uttar Pradesh, Purvanchal, and Bundelkhand.

Recently, an image started circulating over the internet along with the claim that the Central Government has proposed to split the state of Uttar Pradesh into three different states. According to the viral message, Lucknow will be the capital of Uttar Pradesh with 20 districts. Gorakhpur will serve as Purvanchal’s capital, with 23 districts. And Prayagraj will be the capital of Bundelkhand with 17 districts. The message also claims that UP’s division will take place before the following year’s Assembly elections. A post went viral on Facebook with a caption in Hindi that translates to, “Uttar Pradesh will be divided into three states in the monsoon session, this is what is expected. Yogi will remain CM of Uttar Pradesh. Many names are being discussed for West UP and Bundelkhand. Anyway, it is not easy to gather the population of more than 150 countries of the world in the state which has been happening for so many years.”

The state government on 12 June clarified that the viral claim is nothing but a groundless rumor. Sidharth Nath Singh, UP Cabinet minister and spokesperson, said on 11 June that, “News of division of the state is fake and holds no ground”. The Public Relations Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh tweeted that those spreading such rumours will be punished.

This proposal to split Uttar Pradesh into multiple states first came into prominence in 2011, when the BSP government in UP had passed a resolution in the state assembly in favour of a division of the state, and forwarded the proposal to the Centre for consideration. However, this proposal was not given the green signal by the UPA government. The issue had been raised in 2013 as well. And time and again this always kept on surfacing at regular intervals. In September 2019 on Facebook this same post was shared with the caption, “Uttar Pradesh will be divided into three states”.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had in January this year rejected mooting any plan to divide the state, saying his “government believes in uniting and not dividing”.

Press Information Bureau (PIB), the Public Relations Department of the Central Government, also clarified by tweeting that no such proposal has been made yet that the division of Uttar Pradesh should be done. All these rumours are fake, and there is no official verification of these pictures and lists. These are all fake, don’t believe them.

The state’s covid graph is positively declining as the total active cases dropped below 10,000 in the last 24 hours, marking a net decrease of 1,321 cases.  While the state recorded 524 new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the number of recoveries surged to 1,757 during the same span. The total recoveries in the state now stand at 16,70,000. While chairing a Covid-19 review meeting on saturday, the Chief Minister said,
“The number of active Covid-19 patients has come down to 9,806, which is similar to the situation before March end. An average of more than 2.5 to 3 lakh tests conducted daily has ensured that the cumulative positivity rate is sustained at low levels and is presently following a downward trajectory. UP’s daily test positivity rate was 0.19 per cent which is one of the lowest figures in the country. The recovery rate has climbed up to 98.1 per cent,”

Thus, the news of trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh is a past rumor.
